Friday Favorite – Al Cielo – Part One

Most Fridays I feature a website, blog, book, or video that for me has become a favorite. It may be a favorite resource, a source of inspiration, or just something I found interesting. Please feel free to comment, and I hope you might share a favorite or two of your own in the comment section. Who knows, maybe I will feature something you shared as a future Friday Favorite.

Al Cielo

As promised in my last post, this week’s Friday Favorite feature is the beachfront resort Al Cielo. Al Cielo is located on Mexico’s Carribean Coast, sitting on Xpu-Ha Beach in the Riviera Maya region just north of Tulum and south of Playa del Carmen.

Shari and I booked our trip in August as my 8th cycle of chemo was beginning. We figured that even if I was still in treatment, we would both be in need a break by then. And I don’t know about you, but there is always something special about traveling someplace warm during winter, so January seemed like the perfect time for our postponed tropical honeymoon. Fortunately for us, shortly after the trip was booked, my chemo was finished and despite having another surgery on the horizon, our countdown began.

Why Al Cielo?

Neither of us had heard of Al Cielo, nor did we know anyone who had stayed there. But before I tell you how I found the place I must make a disclosure: I married a beach snob. Now I knew this before we got married; it was flushed out during one of our deal-breaker sessions (this will be a future blog post about how to make sure the person you’re dating could be an ideal spouse) as Shari explained what constituted a good beach vs a great beach. For a beach to be great, the sand HAS TO BE white (like powder) and the water Has To BE clear, so clear that she can see what color toe nail polish she’s wearing from chest deep water. There are far worse must-haves when traveling like premium properties, first-class amenities, and thread count restrictions so I consider myself lucky compared to others.

God Wink?

The day after we decided to plan and book our honeymoon, I embarked on doing the research for our trip, something I love to do. Armed with Shari’s “great beach” criteria, our desire to be staying at a beachfront resort, and the requirement that we’d be able to unwind, unplug, and celebrate us…something we both desperately needed, I opened my home page. What should appear in the featured scroll?

The World’s 10 Best Beachfront Hotels – where to stay steps from the sand.

I clicked on the link and the very first featured property was Al Cielo.

Here was the picture:

Here was the description: Staying at Al Cielo means you’re steps from swimming in the turquoise waters of Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Here was the first review we read:

We read every review we could find. Review after review raved about Al Cielo’s beauty, the amazing and accommodating staff, its incredible restaurant, with most closing with a statement that they couldn’t wait to return. If the photos and reviews weren’t enticing enough we came across this video which had us making reservation with Andres, the owner, the very next day.

So what are you waiting for?

If you’re looking for the perfect place to unwind, unplug, and celebrate life, Al Cielo is the place! Don’t just take our word for it, see what has been posted on TripAdvisor, and if you find yourself heading down to Al Cielo, please tell Andres and his staff that Shari & Tom Martin said hello!

Our personal review of Al Cielo will be my next post, look for it on Monday February 6th.
