December 31st has always been considered a day of transition as one year comes to a close and the new year is about to begin. The song most people link to this transition is Auld Lang Syne which symbolizes endings and new beginings. Three years ago I found myself alone on New Year’s Eve and thinking about the mess I’d made of my life, some self induced and some out of my control. I was well on my way toward the new life I have know thanks to coming to know Christ in a real and personal way, but Auld Lang Syne fell short when it came to ringing in the New Year and more importantly the New Life which was emerging from the rubble.
Archives For December 2011
As a year comes to a close there is a natural tendency to reflect on the things we hoped to accomplish.
- What are the commitments we want to hold onto moving forward?
- What commitments do we need to modify because our lives changed during the year?
- What commitments do we need to let go of because they don’t carry the importance they once did?
Typically this exercise leads most of us to start the year off with resolutions we hope to keep, only to be disappointed when we come up short. Last year I shared with everyone another approach called One Word 2011 which fellow blogger, Alece Ronzino, shared on her Grit and Glory blog.
“I’ve never been a New Year’s resolutions girl. I just can’t bring myself to do it. I think I tried once. And a few months later when I couldn’t even remember what my resolutions were — or where my list was — I felt like a miserable failure. And I’ve never made resolutions again. But last year I decided to choose one word to focus on, my own personal non-resolution…resolution.” –Alece
I too have struggled with the resolution/disappointment cycle, which for me usually led to disappointment when my best intentions lacked the commitment necessary to achieve the outcome I desired. Based on a history with failed resolutions, I decided to try Aleces’s approach and joined the One Word team of bloggers. I spent one year not focused on resolutions but staying in tune to one single word to see how that focus might influence my year. One look at the Top 10 Posts of last year illustrate the impact “pausing” had on this past year and our outlook for the future.
Top 10 Posts on Leveraging Life in 2011
2011 was an amazing year!
Looking back, it was a year filled with challenges beyond compare and a year filled with blessings beyond measure. One quick glance at the Top 10 list illustrates where the focus in my writing has been throughout the year. Love, cancer, and community were the major topics, and the central theme of faith and trust in God continued to be the foundation for what was shared.
I’d like to take this moment to thank all of you for your prayers and encouragement throughout the year and your support of Leveraging Life!

So what were the Top 10 posts on Leveraging Life?
I’m glad you asked!
To mix things up for the holidays, I’m featuring Christmas music and assorted holiday videos on Wednesdays, as part of the Leveraging Life Worship Wednesday.
Worship Wednesday is a regular feature on Leveraging Life where I share with you a song and a video. This may be something familiar to you or something entirely new. When possible I will provide the story behind the song so you learn more about the message and what the inspiration was behind the creation of the song. I hope you enjoy this selection and don’t forget you can view all the previous Worship Wednesday selections by clicking here.
It’s December 28th, and for a lot of folks Christmas is a distant memory as their focus shifted from Christmas to New Years in the span of only 72 hours.
- Presents are in use or have been returned.
- Some of us are back at work, while others who are not working have started taking down Christmas decorations.
- You can’t find any Christmas music on the radio and won’t have the opportunity to even request a Christmas song till Thanksgiving 2012.
Was it always like this?
Should it be like this?
I really don’t have an answer, but I do know I would like a transition where the Christmas Season has more of a national emphasis on the “Spirit Experience” than the “shopping experience.”
Baby Jesus, born in a stable, humble Savior’s birth.
You left your throne in Heaven above, to live here on the Earth.
Baby Jesus, lying in a manger, crying for the world.
The Angels told the Shepherds of the Good News for us all. Continue Reading…
I absolutely love Christmas! Christmas was my favorite holiday as a kid and it’s still my favorite as an adult. And while Christmas has always been a favorite, the reasons for it being my favorite has changed over the years.
The love I had for Christmas as a child centered more on the gifts I anticipated receiving from Santa, Mom & Dad, and all my relatives.
The love I have for Christmas as an adult has little to do with the gifts and everything to do with the traditions I value so much.
Early in our marriage, and even before we were engaged, Shari and I took the time to discuss those huge decisions which could become conflict for couples during the holidays. You know those biggies which in some was define you as a couple!
Christmas Tree type, artificial or real? Real…Both of us!
Christmas Tree Lights, colored or white? White…Both of us!
Candles or Wreaths in the windows? Both…big deal to her, neutral to me!
With the big 3 out of the way long before the season actually began we could let the anticipation build as the year progressed.
Christmas 2011
Most Fridays I feature a website, blog, book, or video that for me has become a favorite. It may be a favorite resource, a source of inspiration, or just something I found interesting. Please feel free to comment, and I hope you might share a favorite or two of your own in the comment section. Who knows, maybe I will feature something you shared as a future Friday Favorite.
For the last two years you’ve seen all types of Favorites posted on Leveraging Life. They have been things I’ve found which may make life a little easier for all of us. Others have simply been things I thought amusing and or entertaining.
But this Friday…the Friday before Christmas, today’s favorite hits close to home for me on several levels.
First, for those of you who joined our fight to Stick It To Cancer and helped to raise funds for cancer research you see a glimpse of one of the reasons we walked this year and will walk next year….to remove cancer from the next generation’s vocabulary.
Second, is the gift Jessie shares that comes in the form of a lesson to all of us this Chirismas season. We are reminded that sharing joy is a choice and for her to rise above her circumstances to share this lesson is truly a gift to all who come to know her story.
Third, the opportunity all of us can play to help make Jessie’s dreams and wishes come true!
JoyJars™
JoyJars™ were inspired by 12 year old Jessica “Joy” Rees who decided to spread joy to kids at Children’s Hospital of Orange County while she fights her own inoperable brain tumor. Jessie just wanted to make kids smile, which she does every week when she delivers her own JoyJars™ to Childrens Hospital of Orange County. Spreading joy is one way Jessie continues to inspire others to NEGU (Never Ever Give Up!) …which is the name of Jessie’s foundation. Continue Reading…

Born Is The King – It’s Christmas
Hillsong Music
If I was looking for one word to describe Born Is The King (It’s Christmas), this week’s Christmas Worship Wednesday pick, that word would be celebration. Press play and get lost. The beat grabs you, the lyrics speak to you, and before you know it you’re in the middle of this celebration. Continue Reading…
Who am I to make suggestions on how to pray?
This one question almost kept this post from being published on Leveraging Life. Satan has been having a field day with me, causing me question if I was worthy of following up my post, Who Is Getting Your Leftovers. That was until early Sunday morning when a favorite quote popped in my head. It was almost as if I had been given permission.
Do not tell people how to live their lives. Just tell them stories. And they will figure out how those stories apply to them. Randy Pausch
After re-reading Randy’s words from his amazing Last Lecture, I realized sharing the story, my story, is the only role I have in this. Any application is between you and God. Continue Reading…
